Learning Objectives for Report Writing for Law Enforcement
Learning Objective: The student will have an understanding on the importance of accurate note taking.
Learning Objective: The student will have an understanding of the requirements and importance of their notes and admissibility in court.
Learning Objective: The student will have a basic understanding of recognizing the difference between opinions and observational facts.
Learning Objective: The student will have an understanding of the importance of observation of surroundings while in route to an incident and how that information may be relevant to a good police report.
Learning Objective: The student will gain an understanding of the importance of his own organization at when arriving at the incident scene.
Learning Objective: The student will have an understanding in the importance of answering the Seven Key Questions, Who, What, Where, When, Why, How and How Many.
Learning Objective: The student will have an understanding of the importance of accuracy in crime scene sketches and written crime scene descriptions.
Learning Objective: The student will be able to define M.O. (Modus Operandi) and its importance as it relates to evidence and established patterns of behavior.
Learning Objective: The student will gain a basic understanding of how to structure the chronological flow of information in a police report.
Learning Objective: The student will have a basic understanding of the importance of proper grammar as it relates to police reports.
Learning Objective: The student will have a basic knowledge in how to interview victims and witnesses and the emotional and psychological effects on perceptions and its importance as it relates to an accurate police report.
Learning Objective: The student will have an understanding of the importance of NOT using Police Jargon and/or Street Terms in his report, unless it is an exact quote from a witness, victim or suspect.
