Cognitive Interviewing Skills
Cognitive Interviewing Skills
This course provides the guiding principles to effective interviewing, with specific techniques to be used and others to be avoided. More than half of all police departments offer no formal training for newly appointed investigators and most texts in police science either completely omit the issue of effective interviewing or provide only superficial coverage.  Thoroughly researched and indexed, this course includes practical exercises and real life experiences.
The authors Dr. Ronald P. Fisher- Florida International University and Dr. R. Edward Geiselman- University of California at Law Angeles, provide conceptual background regarding memory retrieval and communication so that students will have a better understanding of why and how the practical suggestions work. The student will also learn to use interview sequential structure- what to probe for at the beginning, middle and the end of the interview, when to use open-ended versus direct short-answer questions, the effective use of pauses, and also cues to name and number recall.

This course will not only benefit investigative police professionals but will also assist attorneys in conducting investigative interviews.
We wish to thank Dr. Ronald Fisher and Dr. R. Edward Geiselman for assisting us in this venture of providing state-of-the art training for law enforcement officers.
